Martin O’Neill takes charge of his first European match as interim Celtic manager against Danish side FC Midtjylland on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman is looking to make it three wins on the bounce since taking over from Brendan Rodgers last week with a morale-boosting 4-0 league win over Falkirk followed by Sunday’s rousing victory over Old Firm rivals Rangers to reach the Premier Sports Cup final.

O’Neill enjoyed many famous European nights in his first spell as Celtic manager, none more so than the run to the 2003 UEFA Cup final, which ended in defeat to Porto.

The upcoming Europa League match in Herning promises to be the toughest test of O’Neill’s 10-day reign, with Midtjylland sitting top of the 36-team table after winning their opening three matches against Sturm Graz, Nottingham Forest and Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Celtic, meanwhile, are down in 21st place with four points from their opening three games after an opening 1-1 draw at Red Star Belgrade and a 2-0 home defeat to Braga was followed by a 2-1 home win over Sturm Graz in Rodgers’ penultimate match in charge a fortnight ago.

Midtjylland have already overcome Scottish opposition this season having knocked Hibs out of the Europa League third qualifying round with a 3-2 aggregate victory in July.
