FIFA gives him a newly created award after losing the Nobel Prize

“The world is now a safer place. A year ago, the United States was not going through a good time, and now I have to say that we are the most thriving country in the world and we are going to continue being that way,” Trump stated with conviction after receiving the award from the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, during the event prior to the draw for next year’s World Cup.

The Republican stated that it was difficult to mediate in several conflicts this year and highlighted the presence, at the event held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, of the heads of government of Mexico and Canada, Claudia Sheinbaum and Mark Carneand, with whom he said he would work “closely” to organize the tournament between June and July next year. “The coordination, the friendship and the relationship have been exceptional,” Trump added.

“This is what we want from a leader, a leader who cares about the people. We want to live in a safe world, in a safe environment. We want to unite. That is what people are looking for here today. That is what we do in the World Cup,” said FIFA president Gianni Infantino, after presenting Trump with a large and spectacular golden trophy and a medal that the president himself hung around his neck.

The president of football’s highest governing body considered that Trump “certainly deserves the first FIFA Peace Prize for his actions and for what he has achieved.”

Since his return to the White House last January, Trump has tried to capitalize as much as possible on the different peace agreements, eight according to him, in which he has successfully mediated this year.

The granting of this ad hoc award comes at a time when Trump has ordered a military deployment to force the Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, to abandon power and his Armed Forces are summarily bombing boats that he claims are transporting drugs in the Caribbean and the Pacific, actions that Congress is now analyzing due to the possibility that they constitute a crime.

In turn, civil organizations this week raised concerns about the prospect of the championship being held in a country that is not respecting due process when, for example, detaining and expelling immigrants or foreign citizens in the country and criticized the lack of transparency of FIFA, which has not made public its criteria for awarding the award.

World football’s governing body announced in November that this year the FIFA Peace Prize, a new annual award given to someone who, according to FIFA, has carried out “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace and, in doing so, has united people around the world.”
