Upon recognizing the water debt with the United States and in the face of Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 5% tariff on Mexican exports if the liquid owed under the Water Treaty is not delivered, Roberto Velasco, undersecretary for North America, reported that The presidential instruction is to reach an agreement, but respecting the human right to water, which, he stressed, “we cannot touch.”
The official, in charge today of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), pointed out that The volume pending delivery is just over one billion cubic meters of water.
He indicated that yesterday afternoon a meeting was held with US officials on this issue, where he indicated that the limitations of the infrastructure on the Mexican side to be able to provide water and the volumes were explained to them.
“There remains a pending volume of just over a billion cubic meters of water that we have to cover at this site,” he said.
“What is the instruction we have? Try to reach an agreement, but of course respecting an issue that is fundamental, which is in our Constitution, which is the human right to water. That is, the right of people to have water for human consumption in cities, which is, let’s say, like what we cannot touch, and, on the other hand, obviously, because the limitations that the infrastructure itself has to be able to provide water and the volumes that we have. But we are trying to reach an agreement that allows us to fairly distribute the water we have right now,” he declared.
On Monday, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 5% tariff on Mexico if the country does not deliver to the United States the water it owes under the water treaty.
