Microsoft recently released security update KB5071546 for Windows 10, which closes a total of 57 security vulnerabilities, including three zero-day vulnerabilities. This update is particularly important for organizations using Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC or the ESU program because it installs automatically and requires a device restart.
After installing the update, Windows 10 will be updated to build version 19045.6691, while Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 will be brought to build version 19044.6691. Microsoft has made it clear that it will no longer be releasing new features for Windows 10, so this update only includes security updates and bug fixes introduced by previous updates.
One of the most significant fixes addresses a zero-day vulnerability in PowerShell known as CVE-2025-54100. This vulnerability allows malicious scripts embedded in a web page to be executed when the page is retrieved using the Invoke-WebRequest command. To prevent this, PowerShell 5.1, the default version on Windows 10, will now display a warning when this command is used.
For unreliable web pages, Microsoft recommends running the command with the -UseBasicParsing argument to prevent embedded scripts from being parsed. This measure is intended to increase user security and minimize the risk of attacks by malicious scripts. According to Microsoft, there are currently no known issues with this update, underscoring the reliability of the security measures provided.
The importance of security updates cannot be overstated, especially at a time when cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Companies need to ensure that their systems are always up to date to close potential security gaps and protect the integrity of their data. Microsoft’s commitment to the security of its users is reflected in the continuous provision of such updates, which not only fix existing vulnerabilities but also ward off future threats.
