New year, new rules. By decision of the Regional Government, from January onwards, prior reservation for access to trails and levadas classified and managed by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation of Madeira will become mandatory. This measure, with most of the details and conditions yet to be announced, is based on a study by the University of Madeira on the acceptable load limit on the 28 recommended routes.
The news was communicated by the regional secretary, Eduardo Jesus, when announcing “an innovative system of reservation and flow control on walking routes and places of tourist interest, aimed at protecting the forest and improving the visiting experience”. In the same note published on the Facebook page of Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation of Madeirait is explained that the measure, for tourists and residents, “will be applied, in a first phase, on the routes and natural areas with the greatest tourist influx”.
The main objective of the Madeiran authorities is to prevent everyone from being in the same places at the same time. The reservation obligation aims to protect the environment, guarantee a more pleasant experience and ensure that, in the event of an accident, emergency services are not blocked by traffic. The trails that will be covered, nor the available times and how to book, have not yet been announced.

It is recalled that, at the end of 2024, the Regional Government of Madeira had started charging an access feecosting €3, for all walkers who follow the classified routes, including trails and levadas. The value will remain unchanged, as well as the exemption for residents and children up to 12 years old.
