The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has ordered Boeing to divest certain divisions of Spirit Aerosystems to address antitrust concerns. These areas supply products to Airbus, which could affect competitiveness in the global aerostructures market. Particular focus is on Spirit’s Malaysian business, which produces aircraft structural components.

Airbus has already expressed interest in acquiring the affected businesses to strengthen its supply chain. At the same time, Malaysian company Composites Technology Research Malaysia is interested in acquiring Spirit’s Malaysian business. These potential acquisitions could significantly change the market landscape and strengthen Airbus’ position in global competition.

The European Commission had previously approved Boeing’s takeover of Spirit in mid-October, subject to conditions. That decision came after Boeing made concessions to ease regulators’ concerns about competition in aerostructures and large commercial aircraft. The requirements include a commitment to continue supplying parts and services to competing contractors for military aircraft programs.

On the New York Stock Exchange, Boeing shares reacted negatively to these developments and temporarily lost 2.88 percent of their value. This market reaction reflects the uncertainties associated with Boeing’s regulatory challenges and potential changes in its corporate structure. Analysts are closely monitoring the situation as the FTC and European Commission’s decisions could have far-reaching implications for the airline industry.
