MEXICO CITY.- The president Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo assured that the departure of Alejandro Gertz Manero of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) was a mutual agreement and is part of an institutional change.
During her conference at the National Palace, the president stressed her recognition of the prosecutor, despite the controversies that marked her management.
“One period has ended, another begins. We agreed on it jointly. My respect and recognition to the prosecutor Alejandro Gertz Manero”.
To an express question, Sheinbaum maintained that there was no resistance on the part of Gertz Manero to conclude his cycle at the head of the Prosecutor’s Office, and indicated that he accepted to be proposed for an embassy. “He agrees to go to an embassy and begins a new stage“, said.
The president avoided confirming the country to which she would go as a diplomatic representative and asked to wait: “Now in due time, let’s not eat cravings”.
Resignation of Gertz Manero, with approval in the Senate on “fast track”
On November 27, Alejandro Gertz Manero formally presented his resignation as attorney general.
The journalist Leti Robles de la Rosa spread in X a photograph of the document, where he thanks him for the opportunity to serve, confirms that he is leaving office as of that day, and requests to begin the process for his ratification as ambassador.
That same afternoon, the Senate endorsed his resignation with 74 votes in favor from Morena, PT and PVEM, and 22 against from PRI, PAN and MC. The Approval was carried out on “fast track”with no paperwork and in just one hour.
The president of the Upper House, Laura Itzel Castilloreported: “The Senate… accepts and approves the resignation… having classified the reason for it as a serious cause”.
However, opposition lawmakers questioned the legality of the process. Senator Clemente Castañeda (MC) argued that being appointed ambassador does not constitute a “serious cause,” as required by law.
Ernestina Godoy assumes interim control of the Attorney General’s Office
After the resignation, various sources confirmed that Ernestina Godoy Rangel took interim control of the FGR.
Joaquín López-Dóriga reported that Godoy resigned from the Legal Counsel of the Presidency and was appointed in charge of the office upon assuming ownership of the office. Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Competence Control.
The Universal She explained that, as her last act in office, Gertz Manero appointed her to head said prosecutor’s office, granting her powers inherent to the position.
Godoy indicated that he will lead the institution while the Senate resolves the formal appointment of the next head.
His appointment occurs three years after the end of the original term of Gertz Manero, who took over as prosecutor in 2019 and was to remain until 2028.
How the resignation was finalized in the FGR
The departure was accelerated after, since the previous night, versions circulated about the prosecutor’s resignation due to “health problems.”
The Senate immediately called a session and, hours later, senators went directly to the FGR, where Gertz Manero presented his resignation.
This closes a cycle that, according to Sheinbaum, allowed “a new stage to begin” in the Attorney General’s Office.
