A 6-kilometer exclusion zone has been set up around the affected area in Bellaterra, which is on the other side of the Collserola mountains from the coastal city of Barcelona. Over the weekend, 300 Catalan police and farmers were deployed to the region, followed by 117 members of Spain’s military emergency unit, using drones to locate and remove potentially infected animals.
African swine fever is harmless to humans but spreads quickly among pigs and wild boars, posing a significant economic risk to Spain, one of the world’s largest pig exporters.
