Spain has mobilized the military in a decisive response to the outbreak of African swine fever near Barcelona. This measure aims to protect the country’s significant pork export industry, which is threatened by the outbreak. Authorities suspect the virus was spread through contaminated food, possibly a sandwich, imported from outside Spain. Two dead wild boars tested positive for the disease, prompting an intensive containment strategy.
A 6-kilometer exclusion zone has been set up around the affected area in Bellaterra, which is on the other side of the Collserola mountains from the coastal city of Barcelona. Over the weekend, 300 Catalan police and farmers were deployed to the region, followed by 117 members of Spain’s military emergency unit, using drones to locate and remove potentially infected animals.
African swine fever is harmless to humans but spreads quickly among pigs and wild boars, posing a significant economic risk to Spain, one of the world’s largest pig exporters. The proximity of the infected area to the AP-7 highway, a major transport route between Spain and France, increases concerns about the possible spread of the virus.
As authorities await final test results, Catalan Agriculture Minister Oscar Ordeig expressed concern that human activities may have brought the virus to Spain from other parts of Europe. A team of EU veterinarians will visit the region to assess the situation and make recommendations. Spanish Agriculture Minister Luis Planas said about a third of the country’s pig export certificates have been blocked due to the outbreak, although no farms have tested positive so far.
