More than 11,000 people in 7 Malaysian states were affected by floods caused by torrential rains, according to what the National Disaster Management Agency announced on Monday.
A report issued by the National Disaster Management Agency showed that 11,000 people from 3,839 families were affected and displaced by the floods in the states of Kedah, Kelantan, Penang, Perak, Perlis, Terengganu and Selangor.
The northeastern state of Kelantan, which is located on the border with Thailand, was the most affected, with 8,228 people affected, without any deaths reported.
The agency’s report showed that 60 temporary shelters were opened in the affected states to shelter those displaced due to the floods.
Floods are common on the east coast of Malaysia during the annual monsoon rainy season from October to March, with thousands of people displaced every year.
The Meteorological Department also issued warnings of continued heavy rains and strong winds.
It is noteworthy that Malaysia was exposed in December 2014 to an unprecedented flood that struck several states in the west of the country, which led to the displacement of about 400,000 people after they lost their homes and possessions.
