Sudanese army sources told Al Jazeera that the army repelled a major attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces on a strategic city in the south of the country, while the head of the Sovereignty Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, denounced the American mediation card.
The sources said that the army repelled the major attack on the city of Babanusa, the most prominent city in West Kordofan State (south of the country), and inflicted heavy losses on the attackers in lives and equipment.
In other fighting areas in Kordofan, a military source in the Sudanese army told Al Jazeera that the army and the forces supporting it have achieved major victories and that the battles are going well according to the plan prepared in advance.
A military source in the Sudanese army had previously reported to Al Jazeera that the army combed the strategic area of Umm Samima, which links the states of North and West Kordofan, and then advanced towards the city of Al-Khoi in West Kordofan.
Proof statements
In this context, Army Commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said – during a meeting with officers of the armed forces, according to a video published by his government about the meeting – that “the armed forces are determined to recover all the lands desecrated by the rebellion in Kordofan and Darfur.”
He stressed that “what he called the militia must withdraw and gather in areas that can be agreed upon with the mediator,” considering that “there is no objection to a ceasefire on the condition that the militia withdraws from every area it entered after the Jeddah Agreement.”
On the political level, Al-Burhan expressed his rejection of the Quartet’s proposal to stop the war in Sudan, considering it “unacceptable” and that the committee is “not neutral.”
Al-Burhan addressed the US President’s Advisor for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, considering that what the Quartet proposed through Boulos is “the worst card to be presented, and that if Boulos wants a solution, he must return to the roadmap presented by the Sovereignty Council.”
Al-Burhan said that the paper “cancels the presence of the armed forces, demands the dissolution of all security services, and keeps the rebel militias in their areas,” adding that “if the mediation proceeds in the direction that Paul proposes, we will consider it non-neutral mediation.”
The army commander said, “We fear that Musaad Boulos will be an obstacle to the peace that all the people of Sudan seek,” considering that “the conversations that Boulos makes are nothing but an image of the mouthpieces of the Resilience and Establishment alliances and the militia.”
The proposal stipulates a “three-month truce” during which the two sides will be encouraged to hold talks to reach a permanent peace agreement, and that the current government and the Rapid Support Forces will be excluded from the political scene after the conflict.
Humanitarian situation
On the humanitarian level, the Chairman of the African Peace and Security Council Commission, Ambassador Bankole Adewole, warned of the deteriorating situation, calling for immediate and urgent action to stop the escalation of violations, especially in the city of El Fasher in the Darfur region, west of the country.
During his meeting with African civil society organizations, Adewole stressed that protecting civilians and strengthening accountability mechanisms remains the Union’s priority, stressing that Sudan will remain a fixed item on its agenda.
The ambassador renewed his commitment to continuing joint work to achieve a ceasefire, protect civilians, and ensure that the voice of the Sudanese is heard in the paths of peace and security.
For its part, the United Nations Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that the violence in the Sudanese state of North Kordofan resulted in the displacement of about 40,000 people between October 26 and November 19, according to the International Organization for Migration.
The office added that more than 600 people were displaced from two villages in North and South Kordofan states. He explained that access to areas in Kordofan is severely limited.
Disastrous conditions
In turn, Muhammad Al-Nayer, the official spokesman for the Sudan Liberation Movement/Abdul Wahid Al-Nur Group, confirmed that the humanitarian conditions in the areas under the movement’s control are catastrophic, which heralds a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent international intervention.
Al-Nayer indicated in his interview with Al Jazeera that 80% of the displaced are at risk of famine. The European Union and the United Nations called for increased support and humanitarian aid.
He stressed the movement’s position in support of all regional and international efforts aimed at stopping the war in Sudan and the necessity of immediately reaching a comprehensive ceasefire with international monitoring, including the army, rapid support, and all revolutionary struggle movements.
Medical sources in the Tawila area called for expanding medical services, given the presence of one hospital that provides services to more than 1.5 million displaced people.
Muawiyah Mohammed, Director of the Emergency Department at the Humanitarian Aid Commission in the White Nile State in Sudan, said that the state received more than 16,000 newly displaced people coming from North Kordofan State in the center of the country, and the Darfur region in the west.
He pointed out that White Nile State is receiving an increasing number of people fleeing conflict areas, bringing the total number of displaced people to more than two million people.
