The Embassy of Portugal in Guinea-Bissau warned Portuguese citizens this Friday about the closing of borders in the African country, on Sunday, a measure related to the general elections and which has already been adopted in previous electoral acts.

In a note published on official channels, the embassy recalls that, “due to the electoral events (legislative and presidential) scheduled for Sunday, November 23, Guinea-Bissau’s land, air and sea borders will be closed between 00:00 and 23:59 on that day.

According to the Portuguese Embassy, ​​the information was made available by the Ministry of the Interior and Public Order of Guinea-Bissau.

The embassy advises “all national citizens who wish to travel to or from Guinea-Bissau to plan their journeys properly and in a timely manner, taking into account the planned border closures”.

O closure of borders on election day is established in Guinean law “for reasons of the country’s security” and to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process.

On Sunday, only humanitarian, emergency, military or Guinean State traffic will circulate across the borders of Guinea-Bissau.

Guineans are called to the polls, on Sunday, for general, legislative and presidential elections, with 12 candidates for President of the Republic and 14 candidates for the National Popular Assembly.
