HEIDELBERG / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A current chocolate test shows that cheap own brands perform surprisingly well. Despite the popularity of expensive brands, organic and private label brands often offer better quality and transparency in the supply chain. But the issue of child labor remains a bitter aftertaste that no brand can completely exclude.

Chocolate is one of the most popular sweets worldwide and comes in many variations and price ranges. A current test by Öko-Test focused on dark chocolate and produced surprising results. While expensive brands are often viewed as being of higher quality, the test results show that inexpensive own brands can definitely keep up. Organic brands in particular stand out positively because they are free from questionable substances and can present their supply chains transparently.

However, a bitter aftertaste remains: the issue of child labor is a problem that none of the tested brands can completely rule out. This highlights the ethical challenges in chocolate production. Despite these issues, some organic brands such as Fairglobe and Ener Bio received good reviews. The conventional brand Tony’s Chocolonely also scored points with its taste and transparency.

The best ratings in the test were given to the Ener Bio Fine Bitter Chocolate with 70% cocoa from Rossmann, the Fairglobe Organic Chocolate Bitter with 70% cocoa from Lidl and the Gepa Grand Noir Tender Bitter with 70% cocoa. These products not only offer good taste, but also a certain level of safety in terms of ingredients and production conditions.

The market for chocolate is diverse, and in addition to the classic varieties, there are also exotic variants such as Dubai chocolate, which stands out due to its unusual ingredients such as pistachio cream and sesame butter. This chocolate is difficult to obtain outside of Dubai, highlighting its status as a luxury item. Social media has further fueled the hype around this chocolate, resulting in high demand and rising prices.

Overall, the test shows that high-quality chocolate does not necessarily have to be expensive. The quality of the ingredients, the method of production and ethical aspects such as fair supply chains are crucial. Brands that focus on sustainability and transparency not only offer a tasteful experience, but also ethical added value. This is an important aspect that consumers should consider when purchasing chocolate.
