The legal dispute between the price comparison portal Idealo and the technology giant Google began in Berlin and could have far-reaching consequences for digital competition in Europe. Idealo, part of the Axel Springer Group, is demanding 3.3 billion euros in damages from Google. The accusation: Google exploited its dominant market position to disadvantage competing services such as Idealo.
The EU Commission had already imposed a fine of 2.4 billion euros on Google in 2017 because the company was said to have manipulated its search results in favor of Google Shopping. This decision was confirmed by the European Court of Justice in 2024. Google gave priority to its own offerings, while competing services disappeared in the search results, which had significant economic consequences for them.
Idealo argues that the damage occurred over years and not, as Google claims, only until 2017. The claim consists of 2.7 billion euros in damages and 600 million euros in interest. Google, on the other hand, rejects the claim and points out that comprehensive changes were made after the EU decision in 2017 to promote competition.
The outcome of this trial could serve as a precedent for further lawsuits against large platforms that favor their own services. The central question is whether European regulation is sufficient to keep digital gatekeepers in check. If Idealo succeeds, it could trigger a wave of further claims and increase pressure on platforms to rethink their practices.
