Previously, Monreal stated in a press conference that the leaders of the National Action Party (PAN) and the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) asked him for more time to debate the issue of the reform to advance the consultation to revoke the mandate, since they consider it to be a “surprise.”
“I have no objection, as president of the Political Coordination Board [Jucopo] I am going to ask the president of the Constitutional Points Commissionto Deputy Leonel Godoy, that he can wait a few days while the debate between the deputies expands,” he noted.
The leader of the Morenoist bench considered postponing the discussion as something positive, and pointed out that “if we are not doing anything improper, if historical reason, moral reason, political reason assists us, we do not have to rush into such an important issue.”
The draft reform of Article 35 of the Constitution, presented by Morena, proposes advancing the consultation to revoke President Sheinbaum’s mandate from August to the first Sunday in June 2027, to coincide with the 2027 elections, with the purpose of “increasing citizen participation, saving resources and reducing electoral fatigue among citizens.”
