SAARLAND / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – In Saarland, the private charging infrastructure for electric cars is growing rapidly, while public charging points are lagging behind. Thanks to the high home ownership rate and previous funding programs, more and more households are installing private wallboxes. This means that Saarland is at the top nationwide in terms of the number of registered electric cars.

There is a remarkable trend in Saarland: While public charging points for electric cars have the lowest density in a nationwide comparison, the installation of private wallboxes is booming. This development is favored by the high home ownership rate in Saarland, as many homeowners have the opportunity to install their own charging stations. Previous funding programs have further reinforced this trend by increasing demand for wallbox installations.
According to the Saarland Ministry of the Environment, around 14,000 non-public charging points had gone into operation by the middle of this year. In relation to the number of registered electric cars, Saarland is at the top nationwide. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, a total of 18,818 electric cars were registered in Saarland as of July 1, 2025. In mathematical terms, almost 74 percent of all electric cars charge at a private station, although this rate only takes into account the subsidized wallboxes.
However, the actual number of private wallboxes could be significantly higher because many owners do not report their charging stations. The Saarland Energy and Water Industry Association (VEWSaar) assumes that the number of unreported cases is high and estimates that the actual number of wallboxes could be around twice as high. This is also because many users do not know that new wallboxes actually have to be registered.
Registering wallboxes with the network operator is important in order to avoid overloads in the power network and to be incorporated into the planning of network expansion. Registration also offers financial advantages for owners, as wallboxes have been considered taxable consumption devices since January 1, 2024, for which cheaper electricity prices are possible. The hurdles for registration are low, and the electrical company that installs the wallbox usually takes on this task.
In addition to registering, it is recommended to have the wallbox checked regularly to avoid possible dangers such as overvoltage or short circuits. Such a check, which should be carried out approximately every four years, can also be beneficial when purchasing a home to ensure that the installation is suitable for the home. A corresponding certificate can also be helpful to the insurance company in the event of damage.
