Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil told Al Jazeera that his country is stable on the political and economic levels, and is ready to repel any attack against it, in light of the American military buildup off its coast.
The minister added, on the sidelines of the summit of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States and the European Union held in the Colombian city of Santa Marta, that his country is living in a phase of peace and is struggling to maintain it, and that at the same time it is prepared to confront any attack on it.
The New York Times previously revealed that the administration of US President Donald Trump is studying the options and risks of a possible military operation against Venezuela, which may include targeting military units loyal to President Nicolas Maduro.
The report indicated that Trump’s advisors presented multiple options, including attacks on forces loyal to Maduro and operations against drug trafficking gangs, in addition to controlling Venezuelan oil fields.
Last August, Trump issued a decree expanding the powers of the US military to combat drug cartels in Latin America, followed by US naval movements near the Venezuelan coast, including submarines and warships, amid statements from US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth that the army was ready to carry out operations in Venezuela, including “regime change.”
