Greenidge Generation has reached an agreement with New York state regulators to extend its operating license for an additional five years. This ends a lengthy legal battle over the company’s Bitcoin mining facility in Dresden, Yates County. The settlement with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) follows a New York Supreme Court decision in November 2024 that overturned an earlier permit denial by the state.

Under the new permit, Greenidge must meet stricter emissions limits, including a 44 percent reduction in allowable greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and an actual emissions reduction of 25 percent over the same period. These targets exceed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) national reduction targets by 40 percent. The NYSDEC concluded that the new limits bring the Dresden facility into compliance with the state’s climate protection targets.

The settlement ends all pending litigation and administrative proceedings between Greenidge and the state, with both sides agreeing to withdraw related cases from the agency’s Court of Appeals and administrative proceedings. Greenidge President Dale Irwin said this voluntary agreement underscores the company’s commitment as a responsible partner to the state.

The Dresden facility, which was acquired and converted by Greenidge in 2016, began powering the local grid in 2017 and added Bitcoin mining operations in 2020. Greenidge emphasizes that the system supplies power for the New York Independent System Operator’s network and its own on-site data center. The permit renewal follows years of battles with environmental groups who argued that the facility’s cryptocurrency activities undermined the state’s climate goals.
