BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – The impending dark doldrums in Germany raise questions about the stability of the energy supply. Despite the expected low feed-in output from wind and solar energy, experts remain optimistic. They see the temporary electricity price peaks as incentives to invest in flexible and climate-neutral back-up capacities.

The upcoming dark lull in Germany, which is characterized by calm and cloudy weather on the weekend of November 8th and 9th, poses challenges for the energy supply. Renewable energies such as wind and solar are expected to only reach a feed-in capacity of less than five gigawatts, well below the demand of 38 to 55 gigawatts recorded the previous weekend.
In such phases, fossil fuels, especially coal-fired power plants, have to bear the brunt of the electricity supply. However, this is only a short-term solution, as the coal phase-out in Germany is planned for the coming years. According to the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology, such weather conditions occur five to ten times a year.
Energy economist Claudia Kemfert from the German Institute for Economic Research emphasizes that short-term lulls can be easily cushioned in today’s electricity system. European electricity networks, flexible reserve power plants, storage and active load management play a crucial role here. Nevertheless, the need for flexible, climate-neutral back-up capacities will continue to grow as coal is phased out.
Interestingly, such periods of darkness can also have positive effects. Temporary electricity price peaks create incentives for investments in a more flexible electricity system and in electricity storage. Energy economist Felix Müsgens sees the price peaks as an important signal for the electricity market, as they illustrate the profitability of investments in flexibility. Households can also benefit from time-variable electricity tariffs by adapting their consumption to the supply and thus saving costs or even making profits.
