North Korea released this Friday a new ballistic missileapparently short-range, towards the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korean Army. The maneuver is recorded a day after Pyongyang promised “respond appropriately” to sanctions imposed by the United States on people and companies accused of laundering money to finance the North Korean nuclear weapons program.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the projectile around 12:35 local time (3:35 GMT) and estimates that it is a short range ballistic missile (SRBM). He added that it was launched from the North Korean county of Taegwan, North Pyongan province, into the Sea of Japan, known as the East Sea in both Koreas.
“The North Korean missile detected flew approximately 700 kilometerswhile the South Korean and US armies are conducting a detailed analysis of its exact characteristics,” the JCS explained in the statement.
The Army added that, under a solid combined defense posture between Washington and Seoul, it closely monitors North Korea’s various movements and maintains the necessary capacity and preparation to respond “strongly” to any provocation.
The US Treasury Department sanctioned last Wednesday eight people and two companies for money laundering for North Korea, funds from illicit operations such as cyber scams, and aimed at financing its nuclear weapons program. The move was announced a week after the Asian tour of Donald Trump in which he finally failed to meet with the North Korean supreme leader, Kim Jong-unfor having a “very tight” agenda.
Washington accused Pyongyang of directing its hackers to obtain illicit funds and finance their weapons programsnoting that in the last three years they have stolen more than $3 billion in cryptocurrencies. North Korea carries out these activities in the face of harsh sanctions from the US and the international community.
The Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichiconfirmed the launch of the missile in statements to the press, made shortly after the North Korean test. “It is believed to have fallen outside the EEZ (exclusive economic zone) of our country and, at the moment, there is no confirmed information about damage,” he said.
The last launch of a North Korean ballistic missile was carried out on October 22, the first time that Pyongyang carried out such tests since the inauguration last June of the South Korean president, Lee Jae-myungand days before Trump’s visit to South Korea.
