Since the occupation of East Jerusalem in 1967 until the present day, the education sector in the occupied capital has faced many challenges due to Israeli restrictions aimed at eliminating the Palestinian education system and replacing it with the Israeli one.
Although Article 50 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantee the right of occupied peoples to obtain education that is consistent with their beliefs and to protect their culture and heritage from change or distortion, the Israeli occupation has come a long way since the occupation of the east of the city until the present day in the field of Israelization of education.
The Israeli attack on education in Jerusalem took multiple forms, in an attempt to disperse the Palestinian regime and destroy it structurally. These attacks culminated in late 2019 when the occupation authorities closed the office of the Palestinian Education Directorate in Jerusalem, claiming that it belonged to the Palestinian Authority, and forcibly prevented its reopening in the city under Israeli sovereignty.
