Judge Adrián Guadalupe Aguirre Hernández, elected in the first judicial elections, presented his resignation two months after taking office.

Aguirre Hernández had been elected on June 1 in the first judicial elections in the country, where he obtained 36,084 votes, equivalent to 3.59 percent of the total. The Judge swore before the Senate on September 1 and was assigned to the Federal Criminal Justice Center in Puente Grande, Jalisco, one of the highest security prisons in Mexico.
The Senator of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Claudia Anaya, publicly confirmed the name of the judge who presented his resignation, thus becoming the first elected Judge to leave office after the implementation of the 2024 judicial reform. The legislator highlighted that this situation marks a precedent in the new model of electing judges by popular vote.
In accordance with current legislation, the vacancy must be filled by the person of the same gender who has obtained second place in the corresponding election. In this case, the candidate Joseph Olid Aranda, who obtained 27,797 votes, would be in charge of occupying the position left by Aguirre Hernández.
Who is Aguirre Hernández?
Official information details that before being elected, Aguirre Hernández served as an administrative and judicial officer in different courts in Jalisco, in addition to practicing as a trial lawyer. In his campaign he presented proposals focused on the efficiency of the criminal system, judicial transparency and direct attention to the public.
With the resignation of Aguirre Hernández, the Senate faces for the first time a procedure derived from the judicial reform. The decision adopted by the Justice Commission will define the way in which the new mechanisms will be applied to fill vacancies in the Federal Judicial Branch under the popular election system.
Months earlier, in September, the full Senate had rejected the request for a temporary license from Judge Ireland Gabriela Pacheco Torres, who intended to leave her position for six months to rejoin the National Customs Agency of Mexico. On that occasion, the legislators argued that the official had enough time to carry out her duties.
