Achraf Hakimi injured his left ankle during Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-2 defeat against Bayern Munich – yesterday, Tuesday – in the Champions League after a reckless and violent intervention by Colombian Luis Diaz.
The Atlas Lions captain left the field crying and unable to walk, and this injury caused a stir in the Kingdom just 6 weeks before the start of the 2025 African Cup of Nations, which will be held in Morocco (from December 21 to January 18).
Moroccan media expressed their concern about Hakimi’s injury, with Hespress newspaper headlined “The injury that shakes the entire country,” stressing that Hakimi is a “key player” in coach Walid Regragui’s plans, and that this injury “comes at a crucial moment.”
For its part, the 360 website stated that “Morocco is holding its breath for one of the national team’s most consistent players.”
After receiving initial treatment in the dressing room, the 27-year-old defender left the Parc des Princes stadium leaning on crutches and a boot on his ankle in “a scene that terrified the fans of Paris, as well as all of Morocco, who were impatiently awaiting news about the condition of their star.”
Is Morocco missing its star in the 2025 Nations Cup?
This question is causing an uproar in Morocco and taking the breath away of Moroccans, especially since Hakimi is not only a key player in the Ragragui squad, but rather a symbol of an entire nation that dreams of winning on its home soil, according to the Moroccan newspaper “L’Opinion”.
The right-back underwent tests this morning, which ruled out a more serious injury, but it will likely rule him out of participating in the African Cup of Nations.
The type of Hakimi’s injury and the duration of his absence
Hakimi suffers from a severe sprain and affected internal ligaments in his left ankle. He may be absent from the field for two months, and the expected recovery period may prevent him from participating at the beginning of the Cup of Nations with Morocco, according to the Spanish newspaper Marca.
Hakimi is likely to play again for the Parisian club in 2025.
Hakimi has been an international player since 2016. He played 88 international matches with the “Atlas Lions”, with whom he achieved a wonderful record, as he obtained the Third place in the Paris OlympicsReached the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
The former Real Madrid player now aspires to the African Cup of Nations, which the Kingdom of Morocco has not won since 1976.
The Moroccan national team will begin its tournament campaign against the Comoros Islands on December 21 in the capital, Rabat.
