The frustration over the lack of water transformed, once again, into a blockade and protest, and on Tuesday, dozens of residents took to the streets of Chimalhuacan to close the vehicular passage in one of the busiest cruises in eastern Mexico.
For almost an hour, traffic was paralyzed amid shouts, banners and slogans demanding a basic right: water in the pipes.
The dissenters pointed directly to the municipal government, headed by the mayor Xochitl Floresfor failing to comply with the agreements established weeks ago, when they were promised the reactivation of the Hojalateros well and a plan for equitable distribution of the liquid. However, they assure that nothing has changed: the water tanks remain empty, the taps dry, and the pipes, when they arrive, are barely enough for a few houses.
“We are tired of living like this. They tell us to wait, that the well is almost gone, but we have been the same for months. The pipes are not enough and they also want to charge us for them. We don’t even have water to wash the dishes,” lamented Doña Carmen, a resident of the Hojalateros neighborhood, with obvious annoyance.
According to the City Council, the shortage is due to maintenance work on the well that supplies the area, and they assured that tanker trucks have been sent as temporary support. Furthermore, they pointed out that the mobilization was led by groups linked to the Torchist Movementwho they accuse of politicizing the situation and hindering repair work.
The blockade was lifted after representatives of the ODAPAS and the municipal government will dialogue with a neighborhood commission, committing to accelerate the work.
Even so, the settlers warned that they do not trust the word of the City Council. If service is not restored soon, they will close streets again and even threaten to demonstrate in the Circuito Exterior Mexiquense.
