Last November 1st, Carlos Manzo, the independent mayor of Uruapan, Michoacánwas shot dead during the Candle Festival celebrated in that town. After this attack, hundreds of people demonstrated on November 2 in the aforementioned municipality, an action that President Claudia Sheinbaum legitimized this Monday during “La Mañanera”, although she also condemned the violent actions of a group of people who took over the municipal palace of Morelia.
Last Sunday, 800 citizens of the capital of Michoacán left the Morelos garden to the government palace to express their condemnation of the murder of the mayor, at 4:00 p.m.
During their journey, cries of “justice for Manzo“and their posters read phrases like “They silenced his voice, but not his message“. Already at the government palace, the protesters sang the national anthem and later a group broke down the main door of the premises, into which a group of people entered.
During their invasion of the government building they threw Molotov cocktails, burned objects, broke doors and windows and carried out destruction.
In addition, some people went up to the main balcony of the building and made the bell ring several times, while dozens of protesters shouted “justice, justice” y “we all went“.
Elements of the anti-riot team arrived at the scene to arrest the protesters, at whom they fired tear gas. The protest led to violent events with 7 arrests.
In this regard, the Secretary of the Government of Michoacán, Raúl Zepeda Villaseñorreported that the government palace was guarded by state security elements and noted that “The people who incited the acts of vandalism have already been located, against whom action will be taken in accordance with the law.“.

Sheinbaum’s reaction to the protest
This morning, from the National Palace, the President of Mexico legitimized the indignation and pain of the citizens who demonstrated in the state of Michoacán, specifically, those who demonstrated in Uruapan for the loss of their president marching with banners that demanded justice and the clarification of the facts; However, he condemned the violent actions of the group of people who took over the facilities of the municipal palace of Morelia.
“The pain, the indignation of the people of Uruapan, for their mayor, is natural and, furthermore, he was a man very loved by his community. […] you have to be sensitive to it“.
The President also pointed out that there were two demonstrations in Michoacán related to the assassination of Carlos Manzo: the first was peaceful, which was precisely the one that was legitimized this morning of November 3 from the National Palace, and another that was carried out in Morelia by a group that took over the government palace with violence.
“The investigation is being carried out there by the Prosecutor’s Office and the state government. […] I would not say that this is part of the demonstration that took place, that they have every right to demonstrate and express what they feel and their ideas, but it is different when there is a provocation and it must also be pointed out.“, he denounced.
Sheinbaum also mentioned during the morning conference that the Security Cabinet will continue working to reinforce and strengthen the national security strategy and, he stated, that during his Administration there will be no return to the war against drugs.
