Luís Mendes Cabral will begin his role as president of the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) this Tuesday, November 4, replacing Sérgio Janeiro, who has been in the position since July 2024.

In a note sent to newsrooms, the Ministry of Health also states that, at the same time, António de Eça Pinheiro begins his role as member of the INEM Board of Directors.

“The assumption of duties by the two new INEM officials follows the designation orders signed yesterday, November 3, by the Minister of Health”, the note reads.

Luís Mendes Cabral has a degree in Medicine, having been director of the Emergency Service at Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada from 2010 to 2012 and, since 2017, he has been clinically responsible for the Medical Emergency System. In addition, he is a training and regulatory doctor at the regional Civil Protection and Fire Service of the Azores, an anesthesiologist and doctor in the air travel and evacuation unit at Hospital do Santo Espírito on Terceira Island.

In turn, António de Eça Pinheiro has a degree in Agrarian Economics and Rural Sociology from the University of Arizona and the University of Connecticut, in the United States of America. He held the positions of member of the Board of Directors of MM, Gestão Partilhada, EPE (2015/2017), Member of the Board of Directors of ULSA, Local Health Unit of the Alentejo Coast, EPE (2018/2020), and Member of the Board of Directors of Hospital de Vila Franca de Xira, EPE (2021/2024).
