Electricity consumption increased by 1.2% in October, compared to the same month last year. Almost a third of the energy consumed results from imports, with natural gas playing a more decisive role.
According to a statement from the Energy Agency (Adene), greater economic activity and weather conditions less favorable to the production of renewable energy were the origin of the data. Now, renewable energy production fell to the lows of September 2023, meeting half (50%) of the demand for electricity.
According to REN, wind energy represented 21.3%, followed by hydro (12.3%), solar photovoltaic (11.1%) and biomass (5.4%).
Non-renewables accounted for 18%, while imports rose to almost a third (32%). This last data is a maximum of 2025.
Also in October, natural gas consumption grew 18.0%, highlighted by the 121.7% increase in use for electricity production. At issue is, precisely, the lower production of renewable energy, explains Adene.
The electrical market, corresponding to natural gas consumed in combined cycle plants for electrical production, represented 35.1%. The remaining 64.9% refers to the conventional market, whose consumption fell 5.8% compared to October 2024.
In terms of natural gas supply, the USA (48.3%) and Nigeria (43.7%) continue to be the dominant markets. Spain has a more modest share (8%).
