A home that operated illegally was closed by the National Republican Guard (GNR), which identified two people for “physical and psychological” mistreatment of the elderly in the municipality of Oliveira do Bairro. In a statement released to newsrooms this Sunday, October 2, the GNR highlights that the action was carried out by the Territorial Command of Aveiro, through the Center for Investigation and Support for Specific Victims (NIAVE) of Aveiro.

According to the Guard, a 34-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man were identified for mistreating the elderly, and two cell phones were seized. The investigation had been ongoing for four months and focused on “the repeated practice of crimes of physical and psychological abuse of the elderly”.

During the investigations carried out throughout the investigation, the military discovered that “the suspects carried out the activity of caring for the elderly in rented residences, without the spaces having adequate conditions for this purpose, nor the caregivers having appropriate professional training”.Three house searches were carried out in the parishes of Bustos and Oiã.

Four elderly people were removed and forwarded to the Social Security support network, having also been flagged and a child with the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ). The minor was sent to a social solidarity institution that supports minors at risk.

The case will now be processed in the Águeda Judicial Court. The GNR emphasizes that this operation had the support of the Health Authority of Oliveira do Bairro, the Social Security of Coimbra, the Social Security of Aveiro and the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People of Oliveira do Bairro.
