The Japanese animated film “Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc” topped the North American box office over the weekend, grossing $17.3 million, and outperforming the American biopic about singer Bruce Springsteen, according to estimates by the specialized company “ComScore.”
The film, produced by Sony and Crunchyroll, is considered one of the most prominent Japanese releases in the American market this year. It is taken from the famous manga series of the same name, and its story revolves in a world of dark fantasy around the orphan teenager Denji, who is killed by the Yakuza gang but comes back to life to become a half-human, half-machine creature known as “Chinsou Man.” (Chainsaw Man).

Critics praised the quality of graphics, animation, and visual effects, considering that the film redefines Japanese anime cinema in the American market, and confirms the success of the new wave of manga films that made their way to Western theaters after “Demon Slayer” and “Jujutsu Kaisen.”
Analyst David A. said: Gross, of Franchise Entertainment Research, said that the topping of “Chinsou Man” reflects “the major shift in the taste of the American public towards Japanese anime, which is no longer an elitist genre or intended for a limited audience, but rather has become a direct competitor to popular Hollywood films.”
He added, “The success of the new film proves that anime is no longer limited to the Asian market, but has become part of the global cinematic economy, just as films such as Damon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and One Piece Red did.”
The horror film “The Black Phone 2” came in second place, starring Ethan Hawke, with revenues amounting to $13 million, continuing the strong performance of the horror series that returns with a new part after the success achieved by the first film in 2021.
In third place came the romantic drama film “Regretting You”, which is the latest adaptation of the novels of American writer Colleen Hoover, after the film “It Ends With Us”, achieving $12.9 million in its first week.
As for the musical biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere,” which tells the life of American rock legend Bruce Springsteen, it came in fourth place with revenues of $9.1 million.
It was estimated that the film would earn about $25 million in its opening week, but the turnout was lower than expected despite the positive reviews and the performance of actor Jeremy Allen White, who plays Springsteen.
