The President of United States of America (USA) recommended to Europe, this Tuesday, “very careful”, because he is making “some wrong decisions” in matters of security and immigration.

Donald Trump’s warning comes just days after Washington published its new security strategy, which targeted European countries on the issue of immigration. This document, published last Friday, anticipated the “civilizational erasure” of Europe and defended the fight against “mass migrations”.

O document has 33 pages, of which the 25th and 26th are especially dedicated to Europe, under the title “Promoting European Greatness”. The chapter argues that US authorities have become accustomed “thinking about European problems in terms of insufficient military spending and economic stagnation”, but that Europe’s problems “are even deeper”.

Trump identifies, as the biggest source of problems, “the activities of the European Union and other transnational organizations that undermine political freedom and sovereignty”. It also alludes to “migration policies that are transforming the continent and creating conflicts, censorship of freedom of expression and suppression of political opposition, a sharp drop in birth rates and loss of national identities and self-confidence”.

The text echoes a speech given by vice-president JD Vance, in Munich, last February. This pleased the far right and shocked European supporters.

If current trends continue, the document also states, “the continent will be unrecognizable in 20 years or less”so European countries are at risk of not having sufficiently robust economies and armies to “continue to be reliable allies”.

The administration criticizes European decisions that, in its view, “undermine political freedom and sovereignty, migration policies that transform the continent and create tensions, the censorship of freedom of expression and the repression of political opposition, the fall in birth rates, as well as the loss of national identities”.

Costa rejects “threat of interference”

The president of the European Council reacted, on Monday, to the American document and Trump’s words. According to António Costa, a Europe cannot accept a “threat of interference” in its political life.

“What we cannot accept is this threat of interference in the political life of Europe”, declared Costa, in an intervention at the Jacques Delors Institute, highlighting that “the USA cannot replace European citizens in choosing which parties are good and which are bad”.

“We have differences in our views of the world, but this goes beyond that. This strategy continues to talk about Europe as an ally, but, if we are allies, we must act as allies” and respect each other’s sovereignty, defended the former Portuguese ruler. Costa stressed that, despite the differences, “the USA continues to be an important ally, the USA continues to be an important economic partner”.
