“I’m very proud.” This is how Donald Trump announced the agreement between Israel and Hamas to launch the first phase of his peace plan for Gaza, which contemplates the release of all live and dead hostages and the withdrawal of the Israeli Army to a still unspecified line. The American president, in search of the Nobel Peace Prize, which will be awarded on Friday, has announced that he will travel to the Middle East this weekend to lead negotiations that “are going very well.”
During a public event at the White House, Trump was informed by his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, that negotiations on the war in Gaza were very close to ending the conflict, or at least a ceasefire. “I’m going to go to Egypt,” the Republican president promised shortly after unveiling the pact, signed by both sides, through a message on the Truth Social network.
The negotiations, in which he is represented by his son-in-law Jared Kushner and his special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, are being held in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh, on the shores of the Red Sea. But Trump also mentioned the possibility of making “a round” of the region, which would lead him to celebrate the agreement with Benjamin Netanyahu. In fact, the Israeli prime minister has already invited his counterpart to give a speech before the Parliament (Knesset) in Jerusalem.
Asked about the possibility of also visiting the ruins of the Gaza Strip, where more than 67,000 people have died since the outbreak of war two years ago, caused by the Hamas attacks on October 7, Trump did not rule it out either: “I may go.”
The first phase of peace for Gaza also occurs at a key moment for one of the US president’s aspirations: to win the Nobel Peace Prize. If during his furious speech a few weeks ago before the UN General Assembly he already boasted of having stopped seven wars in eight months, ensuring that there is a clamor in “the whole world” to grant him recognition, the latest events and the tour of the Middle East seek to reinforce his candidacy, although the bets barely give him a 3% chance.
So far, three American presidents have won the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and Barack Obama. Trump, who this year has bombed Iran’s nuclear plants, has deployed the National Guard in several American cities and has started a war against drug trafficking, attacking alleged boats transporting drugs in the Caribbean, is seeking recognition that eluded him during his first term, whose greatest diplomatic success was the Abraham Accords.
