Santa Maria, the easternmost of the Azores islands, is preparing to become a true gateway to space exploration. Portugal and the European Space Agency announced this Thursday that the island will be the landing site for the Space Riderthe reusable vehicle from ESAon its inaugural flight. Furthermore, the island will be born Santa Maria Space Technology Center (Santa Maria Space Hub), num total investment of 15 million eurosof which three million come from the coffers of the Regional Government of the Azores.
The announcement was made in Bremen, Germany, during the meeting of the 23 ESA Member States. Portugal thus reinforces its investment in the space sector, increasing its contribution to the agency by 51%: in the period 2026-2030, the country will invest 204.8 million euros — the highest value ever. This financing will make it possible to develop infrastructure on the island, strengthen national industry and open up new scientific and technological opportunities.
“Based on the investment made over the last 25 years and the scientific, technological and business capabilities developed, Portugal decided to reinforce its commitment to Space in the next ESA cycle”, he explained. Fernando AlexandreMinister of Education, Science and Innovation.
For the minister, the Azores will play a central role in this strategy: “The Autonomous Region will have a crucial role in the development of the new strategy for Space and in the affirmation of Portugal as an Atlantic nation through Space”. The Santa Maria hub is “aligned with the objectives of strengthening European autonomy in launch and return operations, as well as developing Earth and ocean observation capabilities”.
In addition to the Space Rider’s inaugural flight, the center will host scientific experiments in microgravity e test technologies for future missions. The idea is to create a multifaceted hub that puts the island on the European map of space research and innovation.
The national investment will make it possible to move forward with the construction of infrastructure, reinforce Portugal’s participation in ESA’s structuring programs and increase the competitiveness of the national industry linked to space technologies.
The agreement was signed by Fernando Alexandre, the director general of ESA, Josef Aschbacherand by the president of the Portuguese Space Agency, Ricardo Condewith the presence of the Italian Minister of Companies, Adolfo Ursothe country that leads the Space Rider mission.
