More than twenty years after the release of the Rollins Band’s last album, Henry Rollins is back in music. The former Black Flag singer has been working on new songs with a childhood friend, also a punk idol: Ian Mackaye, from Minor Threat and Fugazi.
On his own website, Henry Rollins explained that these songs were recorded at Inner Ear Studios, in Washington DC (a very important place in the history of punk hardcore American), a few weeks ago, with producer Don Zientara. “It was wonderful to be there again, with Ian and Don,” he wrote.
The songs, he continued, have already been mastered, with Rollins currently working on design of the disk. “I’ll let you know when it’s ready. We’re really excited about it.”
Not much else is known about the project, which will be the first in which Henry Rollins is involved, musically speaking, since “Nice” (2001), the last album by the Rollins Band. In 2021, the musician stated, on Rick Rubin’s podcast, that “the smartest thing I did when I was young was, one day, to wake up and say: I’m tired of music”.
In 2009, Rollins collaborated with the Flaming Lips on a tribute album to Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon”, in which he recorded some excerpts in format spoken word. Ian Mackaye, since Fugazi announced a hiatus in 2003, has released albums with The Evens and Coriky in recent years.
