Until December 8th, 16 restaurants in Ílhavo remember what fishermen’s meals were like on board cod boats. The menus at the Festival Gastronomia de Bordo feature dishes based on cod, which make use of the parts of this fish that are less valued, like faces, tongues, cheeks and pimples.
With the cod as the protagonist, the Festival Gastronomia de Bordo, in Ílhavo, aims to transport the palate to the flavors of the cuisine of old cod ships.
The special menus include both traditional approaches – such as pataniscas, chora, cod with grains and chorizo and samos feijoada – as well as new creations that reinvent on-board cuisine, including cod roe salad, cod calhos (or samos) or cod massada with cricos. The menus can be enjoyed individually or as a shared experience between two people.
As a way of valuing cultural heritage, the Municipality of Ílhavo offers customers of the Gastronomia de Bordo Festival a voucher for free entry to the Ílhavo Maritime Museum or the Maritime Religiosity Center.
At the Canastra do Fidalgo restaurant, in Costa Nova, the “Sames em escabeche” are the first dish on the menu.
Whoever chooses these menus receives a voucherwith free entrances to one of Ílhavo’s three museums alluding to the sea.
