The leader of the PS, José Luís Carneirothis Tuesday criticized the Government for celebrating the November 25th com “sectarianism” and a “revisionist temptation to settle accounts”arguing that the historic date should be remembered as a milestone of the institutionalization of Portuguese democracydifferent from April 25th.
Within the scope of the first part of the party’s National Political Commission, Carneiro highlighted that the 25th of November represents the victory of those who have always fought for freedom before and after the 25th of April, and that figures such as Mário Soares, Ramalho Eanes and the PS itself continue to be pillars of this democratic process. The socialist leader also joined the suggestion by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, that Ramalho Eanes be awarded the title of Marshal during his lifetime.
In addition to Carneiro, Manuel Alegre, honorary president of the PS, Isabel Soares, daughter of Mário Soares, and Colonel Manuel Pedroso Marques, who presided over RTP in 1975, intervened.
In the second part of the meeting, closed to the media, Carneiro addressed the PS’s position on State Budget for 2026highlighting that the party abstention contributed to “emptying Chega’s position” and avoiding a political crisis, highlighting that the Government cannot hold the PS responsible for the possible failure of economic forecasts.
O socialist leader reiterated that November 25th must be celebrated with national scope and without reductionist interpretationsreinforcing the importance of uniting the Portuguese around the country’s great historical dates.
