Mexico City, October 18 (However).- The President of USA, Donald Trumpsigned yesterday order to impose a tariff of the 25 percent at imports of medium trucks y heavyand a 10 percent to those of bus. The measures, which had been announced on October 6, will begin to be applied on November 1.
As determined by the Republican magnate, the trucks that do not meet the criteria of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) will face the tariff on the total value of the vehicle. On the contrary, those who qualify for the preferential treatment They will only pay the tax on content not produced in USA.
The measure includes vehicles from classes 3 to 8, such as cargo trucks, dump trucks, moving trucks, tractor-trailers and large pickup trucks, as well as key components such as engines, transmissions, tires and chassis.

In the case of buses, the 10 percent tariff will be applied to all imported vehicles, without distinction of country of origin or commercial benefit.
The decree also clarifies that the affected products will not be added to previous tariffs on steel, aluminum, copper, wood or automobiles, and will not be applied together with reciprocal measures in force against Canada, Mexico, Brazil or India.
The Trump Administration justified the measure as a response to requests from the automotive industry. In parallel, the US president extended until 2030 a program that allows US manufacturers to deduct 3.75 percent of the list price of vehicles produced in the country with imported parts, to alleviate the effect of the new taxes.
On March 6, 2025, Trump announced that products that complied with the USMCA rules of origin would be exempt from tariffs until April 2, 2025.
