The problem is that everyone feels they have more than 70 percent approval, like Claudia Sheinbaum. The problem is that under that mantle, which they also had with Andrés Manuel López Obrador, they have acted with negligence, mediocrity, little transparency, greed and dishonesty. I say it in plural because there are more than one.
Some time ago someone told me that Alejandro Gertz Manero was working inside the Attorney General’s Office dressed in a silk robe. So I didn’t know if it was figuratively speaking, but I think not, that it was just what it was, because another person said the same thing, later on. The problem is that this useless Prosecutor, whom many of us have denounced for years, used a misunderstood mantle to appropriate a castle where Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, Enrique Peña Nieto, Carlos Romero Deschamps, Felipe Calderón, an infamous number of PAN lawyers and other recognizable thugs walked around naked, and more, many more people who took advantage of the moment to get their way.
Nobody should defend Gertz Manero. It made justice lose seven valuable years and delayed seven valuable years for the 4T to fulfill the promise of incorruptible and expeditious justice. Someone told me that he was an administrator of impunity. I would say that he was not the administrator of anything: he was the one who went unpunished, because there is guilt in omission, in negligence, in the rot that surrounds you; There is guilt in shamelessness, in arrogance, in meanness. Because even that was it: a mean person. He had to resign many years before. He had to accept that he didn’t give the width for whatever reason and that he was in the way. He must have understood, at the end of his assignment, the beauty of dignity.
He is an 86-year-old man, for God’s sake: he has already made all the fortune he could and that he will never spend. He should have left at least with some prudence, without meanness. But not. He was arrogant. It was capricious. It was damaging even in the end.
Your own letter should embarrass you. Say ought because it will not embarrass him. Gertz Manero complains when the President gives him a dignified exit. “He has proposed me as Ambassador of Mexico in a friendly country,” he complains. Well, going to “some friendly country,” as he calls it, is more than he deserves and a gesture of tremendous generosity for someone who delayed the effects of justice in times that demand firm and demonstrable actions. “Any friendly country,” I would say, is an undeserved award for a Prosecutor who did not appreciate that AMLO left him for so long (and I do not understand why) and that Sheinbaum gave him an opportunity to vindicate himself.
The Prosecutor of the fiasco will believe, perhaps, I don’t know, that because the majority of the opinion leaders, the media and their journalists; The majority within the PAN and the PRI never complained (suspiciously) about anything, they have the strength required to confront whoever, whenever, and that is where they are wrong: everyone pays at some point for the excesses; some in installments, others all at once, but everyone pays.
Gertz tried to object. He leaked cases, files. And when the last growth spurt came, a media tantrum was organized. He leaked more and organized a round of interviews with opponents of the President. He threatened with a weapon and in fact armed it, because the turbulence that was experienced in the Senate was part of his resistance to leaving a position that he should have left at least six years before.
The ungrateful
The problem is that some, starting with Gertz, feel that they are part of the more than 70 percent approval rating that AMLO had at the time or that Claudia Sheinbaum has now. And under that mantle they can be negligent, mediocre, opaque, greedy, dishonest. And they think that because they are in a Government that has good qualifications – even if it makes the opponents angry –, they can build small kingdoms.
But it is a misunderstood mantle and power. And Gertz will soon find out that this “some friendly country” is the best thing that could have happened to him in the last stretch of his life, when he should have been prudent and became ungrateful.
On Thursday night he asked three media outlets (friends of his and enemies of the President) to open space for an interview. On Friday he regretted it: he told them no, that he would look for them later.
The vortex of the hurricane swallowed Alejandro Gertz Manero and he threatened to jump into the water with a sponge tangled around his waist.
The whirlpool had been accelerating for some time. A contest name gave him speed: Raúl Rocha Cantú. The type has been linked to rot for two decades. They allowed him to leave Casino Royale unstained and of course, he came back for more. Huachicol, games, contracts with Pemex. And then, Miss Universe, well of course, yes sir.
But there was a federal investigation underway and it was robust: on November 15, the arrest warrant was issued. Some say that Rocha Cantú was abroad because of the beauty pageant and others say that he was already calculating that the scandal of the two ships with huachicol would lead, among others, to him. Just as it happened. Then came an operation in Mexico City, Querétaro and the State of Mexico and things got serious again.
The businessman has already fled abroad with everything and family. He did so in 2011, when the relatives of the 52 killed in the attack on the Casino Royale in Monterrey demanded a credible investigation for all those involved, including the owners of the betting business. Muñoz Rocha played the victim and in the end, he won. He managed to leave without stain. Spotless!
The maneuvers to guarantee impunity now seemed to be repeated, because on November 19, four days after the arrest warrant was issued, the Prosecutor’s Office announced that it was considering opportunity. Raúl Rocha Cantú would be your protected witness! Within the federal government they were surprised. And anyone could wonder who he was going to denounce upwards (this last important one), although there was another question in the air: And who did Alejandro Gertz Manero notify that he would give such a privilege to the subject surrounded by a federal investigation that was NOT in his hands? Who did you coordinate with before basically offering him a chocolate cupcake? The question is rhetorical because the answer was always there: he coordinated with no one, he notified no one.
With an additional detail: the investigation by the Ministry of Security and Citizen Protection involves Rocha, yes, but also several of Gertz’s subordinates in the Prosecutor’s Office. The same Prosecutor’s Office that now gave a criterion of opportunity to Rocha was within the investigation.
The President of Mexico, Gertz wrote, “has proposed me as Ambassador of Mexico to a friendly country.” The letter sounds like a complaint.
Damn: what a way to dirty a gesture of tremendous generosity. He should have been prudent and he was ungrateful.
Friend Gertz
“Personally, I recognize the work of the Attorney General of the Republic, Dr. Alejandro Gertz Manero. He has been a serious public servant, who has conducted his work with strict adherence to legality, without political overtones, with impartiality, without prominence and defending institutional autonomy. In times when power wants to subjugate everything, the The Prosecutor’s Office has maintained its role: to enforce the Law, not the whims of the Government. Mexico needs institutions that do not bend, that act firmly and that respond to the people, not to power. I very much regret the coup movement that Morena’s narcopoliticians launched against them. It is one more example of the authoritarian face of this regime, which wants to impose a terrorist and communist narco-dictatorship in Mexico,” PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas wrote a few days ago on his X account.
Last August 28, at night, Hugo Eric Flores Cervantes, president of the Investigative Section of the Chamber of Deputies that evaluates the violation of “Alito”, revealed the disappearance of the PRI leader’s file for the alleged diversion of 83 million. Like this: disappeared. And furthermore, the Prosecutor’s Office never requested that his immunity be removed. Gertz Manero never did the procedure!
The Prosecutor saw the idiotic faces of all of us who were waiting for Moreno Cárdenas to be removed. He put his finger on all of us who wondered why the process was not moving forward. Dishonest and deluded prosecutor: that was going to come out at some point. Now imagine how many high-profile cases like this in seven years. That is why, I say, the Prosecutor enjoys such good press. This explains why the opposition never questioned him and when they faced him it was to compose praises for him with their little guitars.
“When we arrived at this legislature, we did not find it [el caso ‘Alito’] as a pending matter and reviewing all the files we only found one document and it caught our attention. This document was basically saying that the matter was not filed […]. There was a bunch of bureaucracy there. There was even annoyance with us because we were trying to say ‘why is there only one paper?’. There was nothing else. There was nothing more about this matter and it is obviously a relevant matter, from a legal point of view, but also from the point of view of public opinion,” the legislator explained.
Some time ago someone told me that Gertz Manero served in a silk robe and it seems that was the case. But it was literal, and it was figurative. Because that silk robe was that of the king of impunity; that of someone who distributes favors with impunity and who also favors himself by being, of all people, the one who goes unpunished.
Gertz goes with the stain to a friendly country as the former prosecutor who made us all lose seven years. May he never be forgotten, may he never be forgiven: he was, without further ado, the Prosecutor of the fiasco.
