MADRID, Spain.- This Tuesday, the kings of Spain received with military honors al sultan of oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Saidin a ceremony that took place in the Royal Palacelocated in the center of the city of Madrid.
With this ceremony the events of the first visit of the Omani sultan to Spain to strengthen ties and bilateral relations between both countries.
The ceremony began at 10:30 (Spanish local time) with the arrival of the sultan to the Armory Square of the Royal Palacea central palace that is used for formal events.
Reception at the Royal Palace
There, the sultan was received by the King Felipe VI and Queen Letiziatogether with a Spanish delegation headed by the president of the government, Pedro Sanchez.
The president of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol; the president of the Senate, Pedro Rollanand that of the Constitutional Court, Cándido Conde-Pumpidowere also part of the Spanish welcoming delegation, among other authorities, while Haitham bin Tariq Al Said He travels accompanied by five ministers.
After listening to the anthems of both countries, the king and the sultan reviewed the troops, greeted both delegations and witnessed the military parade of the honors battalion of the Spanish Royal Guard.
Last May, the Sultan of Oman postponed his state trip to Spain after the mother of the Omani first lady died, Ahad bint Abdullah Al Busaidiyah.
Lunch and gala dinner with the kings

At noon, Felipe VI will have a meeting and lunch with the sultan at the La Zarzuela Palacea complex located in a wooded area on the outskirts of Madrid and which is home to the residence of the Spanish monarch and Queen Letizia, who will also attend the lunch.
At night, there will be a gala dinner at the Palacio Real, offered by the kings in honor of Haitham bin Tariq Al Said.
Ascension to the throne of Oman in 2020

The sultan ascended the throne of Oman in 2020after the death of his predecessor, Qabus Bin Saidwhose funeral Felipe VI attended.

They will award two decorations
As part of this trip, the Spanish Government has awarded two decorations: the Collar of the Order of Isabella the Catholic to Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq Al Said and the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic to other Omani personalities.
This state visit is the first to take place in Spain since May 2023, when that of the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, took place.
