Mexico City, October 25 (However).- Despite his delicate state of health, a basic education teacher from San Luis Potosi is being forced to continue teaching classes, so parents at the school organized a protest to demand that the student be granted medical disability. teaching. In a publication that was published on October 9, it was detailed that the teacher suffered a domestic accident due to which he cannot walk and depends on a wheelchair to get around, to which is added a bacterial infection that “destroyed his immune system”, which has physically limited him from continuing to work.
“Teacher Omar Ulises Aradillas Márquez from Benito Juárez Elementary School is living a nightmare. His body no longer responds, a bacteria destroyed his immune system and a domestic accident left him unable to walk. Even so, the system requires him to report to work,” the public complaint highlighted.
In the same publication, the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE) was accused of denying the corresponding disability to the teacher, under the argument that “the accident did not occur during working hours”, a fact that motivated the indignation of the parents who organized to protest at the Benito Juárez primary school.
“The teacher cannot stand, but they treat him as if he were a machine, as if his life was worth nothing,” denounced the parents, who demanded that he be given “immediate medical attention and paid leave.” In addition, they requested that “the officials who abandoned him” be sanctioned.
Likewise, they assured that the “ISSSTE does contemplate leaves and benefits for illness or accidents ‘unrelated to work’. That is, the fact that it did not occur during working hours should not prevent granting medical disability, as long as the medical service dictates it”, so they considered that the denial of disability “has no moral or human justification.”
During the demonstration that the parents held at the facilities of the Benito Juárez Primary School, Isael Villa de Jesús, representative of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) commented to the newspaper El Sol de San Luis that despite the physical limitations that the teacher faces, the ISSSTE has denied him the medical disability he requires.
As a consequence of this refusal, the teacher has continued to attend the school, since if he does not show up to teach classes, the educational authorities could file an administrative report on him under the justification of abandonment of employment, despite the fact that the primary school does not have adequate facilities for him to move around safely, since he comes in a wheelchair.
Villa de Jesús pointed out to El Sol de San Luis that Professor Aradillas Márquez is being treated in a clinic in Ciudad Valles, where, he assured, medical care is deficient and inhumane, due to the scarcity of medical consultations, the slow scheduling of clinical studies and the difficulty in granting medical disabilities, without, until that moment, any institutional authority having pronounced itself.
The state of the teacher’s health has also worried parents, since, on the one hand, they empathize with the health situation that the teacher is going through and, on the other, they are distressed at the possibility that the quality of their children’s education may decrease, since they consider that Aradillas Márquez is not in optimal physical condition to perform his duties fully.
This led to them organizing to protest at the Benito Juárez primary school facilities to demand that the health authorities grant him the disability that the teacher requires, as well as adequate medical care. While the parents requested that the educational authorities send them a substitute teacher to take over Aradillas Márquez’s duties while he remains incapacitated.
“A teacher should not beg for what is a right, the disease has no working hours, and neither does empathy,” the dissidents highlighted in their publication spread on social networks, after which the ISSSTE Representation in San Luis Potosí issued a statement, in which it was stated that they have followed the case of Professor Aradillas Márquez in a timely manner.
It was even assured that, when required, that health institution has provided the necessary medical licenses for the teacher’s recovery.
