The Security Cabinet pointed out that, from November 10 to 19, 87 people have been arrested and 43 weapons, more than 6,300 cartridges, 348 magazines, 60 explosive devices, more than 300 kilograms (kg) of methamphetamine, 13 kg of marijuana, 9,200 liters and 2,300 kg of chemicals, in addition to 75 vehicles and 59 complaints have been attended to. Just on November 16, the Governor of Michoacán, Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, appointed José Antonio Cruz Medina as the new head of the State Public Security Secretariat (SSP), with the purpose of strengthening the security strategy that President Claudia Sheinbaum presented last November 4.
“Today we take a firm step in strengthening our security strategy: José Antonio Cruz Medina assumes ownership of the State Public Security Secretariat,” shared the state president on his official X account.
In a statement, the Government of Michoacán reported that Cruz Medina assumes the position after serving as Deputy Prosecutor of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) of Michoacán, where he headed areas of analysis, intelligence and police operations. For her part, the President assured on November 4 that her Government will never return to the war strategy against drugs implemented by Felipe Calderón Hinojosa.
“War means permission to kill. War means that extrajudicial executions are allowed. What does an extrajudicial execution mean? That an element of a Mexican Armed Force can shoot a person simply by presuming that he is a criminal, not in self-defense, but having the order to execute. That was the war against drugs: extrajudicial executions. And they still dared to say that there was collateral damage, that is, people who They died in that process, because it was part of the war and it was justified. We will never have that strategy. First, because we are humanists and we do not believe that extrajudicial execution is a solution. […] That leads to nothing because that is injustice and does not build a humanist society, and we are foolish in building a humanist society within the Law,” he said.
“It is not just filling the state with soldiers, with the National Guard, and even less, although with presence, it is important, less with permission to kill. Not that. The war against drugs is not. That cannot return to our country and that is why this approach of the ‘Michoacán Plan for Peace and Justice’,” added Sheinbaum Pardo.
