PROGRESS.- After more than 41 hours of blockade on 25th Streetresidents of the area reached an agreement with state authorities to clear the way for trailers who are heading to the Remote Terminal.
The compromise was reached at 9:52 pm yesterday Wednesdayafter a meeting led by Mirna Manzanilla Romero, undersecretary of Social Development and Religious Affairs, who attended as state envoy.
As we reported, the Blockade began on Tuesday, November 18 at 8 in the morning, when residents of 25th by 46th Street prevented the transit of cargo units as a measure of pressure in the face of vehicle saturation and the effects that they have been denouncing for months.
New date to open the Progreso elevated viaduct
The protest coincided with the announcement by the State government about the opening of the elevated viaductnow scheduled for the next Wednesday, November 26after concluding its testing period that began on November 6.
The news was communicated to the neighbors yesterday afternoon, when Manzanilla Romero arrived accompanied by authorities and representatives of the business and port sector, such as deputy María Esther Alonzo Morales; Elías Góngora, senior official of the City Council; Víctor Conan, Director of Operations of the Puerto de Altura, and customs agent Bernardo Mier y Terán, invited by the residents.
There, Mier y Terán proposed that the authorities give the neighbors a document that would guarantee that streets 25 and 46 would no longer be used as alternate route for trailer trafficexcept in exceptional cases, such as a serious accident that makes the use of the elevated viaduct impossible.
The suggestion was immediately supported by the inhabitantswho reiterated that they would not remove the blockade without a written guarantee.
Unable to issue an immediate response, officials agreed to postpone the meeting while they took the necessary steps to meet the demand.
Authorities accept a condition of neighbors
The neighbors remained at the site awaiting the return of the authorities, which occurred hours later, when the undersecretary confirmed the government’s willingness to advance the agreement.
