The suspension by the Government of Mexico includes fresh meat from Spain, as well as hams, sausages, matured products and offal intended for human consumption, among other products.

Mexico City, November 29 (However).- The Government of Mexico suspended on Friday the import of pork coming from Spainwhich derived from the announcement made by the health authorities of Catalonia about an outbreak of over the African pig (PPA) in the region of Barcelona.

The restriction of Secretary of Agriculture (It fits), which was announced through a statement, includes fresh meat, hams, sausages, matured productsoffal intended for human consumption and raw materials used for the manufacture of pet food.

The federal authorities specified that the regulations apply both to commercial operations and to items transported by travelers when entering Mexico, in order to protect national pork production from possible animal health risks, through the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica).

In this sense, it was detailed that the suspension derived from the discovery of two wild boars positive for the African swine fever virus in the municipality of Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona, which was notified by the Official Veterinary Services (SVO) of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Spain.

“As a result of this case, the first in the European country since 1994, Mexico, through the National Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica), decided to suspend the import of pork products from Spain, while animal health information is received on the response to the outbreak,” Sader said.

The outbreak of swine fever detected by the Spanish Ministry of Health is the first since 1994, and it could put meat exports to China at risk, despite the fact that the virus is harmless to humans, since its spread is fatal for pigs.

The Ministry has informed the European Union of this situation and has activated emergency measures in the affected area, which is why pig farms were urged to reinforce security measures while investigators investigate the origin of the infection.

It should be noted that Spain is the main pork producer in the European Union, with approximately a quarter of the bloc’s production, which puts it ahead of Germany, according to information from the Ministry of Agriculture of that country.
