In California there is a special election for Proposition 50, Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting plan, promoted after the change of five districts in Texas, approved by Republicans.
The Proposition would allow him to temporarily bypass California’s independent redistricting commission and implement a more favorable congressional electoral map for his party before the 2026 midterm elections.
Polls indicate voters are leaning toward supporting Proposition 50, backed by former US President Barack Obama. If approved, it would allow progress on a map that would give five seats to Democrats in the House of Representatives.
New Jersey and Virginia
In New Jersey there is a close electoral race for state government, between Democrat Mikie Sherril and Republican Jack Ciattarelli. The survey of AtlasIntelpublished on November 1, showed that the Democrat obtained 50.2 percent of the votes compared to Ciattarelli’s 49.3 percent, with a margin of error of two percent, that is, a technical tie.
Sherrill has had the backing of high-profile Democrats, including Sen. Rubén Gallego (Arizona), who led two events Sunday in the state and called on Latinos to cast their votes in favor of Sherrill.
“To all the Latinos who are here today, we are the workers of this country, we are the defenders of this country, we are the community that wants to ensure that everyone has the opportunity for the American dream,” Gallego said at the event held in Hudson County. “Go out and vote for the future of your children, the future of the country. This country is not going to be safe if the Latino community is not safe, please.”
In New Jersey there are also elections for the General Assembly.
In Virginia there will be a vote for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General and the 100 seats in the House of Delegates.
The state will make history, as it could have a female Governor for the first time. The contenders are Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears and Democrat Abigail Spanberger, who is a former congresswoman and former CIA agent.
The race in Virginia is considered the “laboratory” for what could happen in the 2026 midterm elections, as a way to find out how voters rate President Trump’s policies.
The Republicans have an important position at stake, since if Earle-Sears manages to prevail, that would help the legal standing of his party colleague, Governor Glenn Youngkin, who could even seek to compete for the Presidency.
The candidates for Lieutenant Governor are Democrat Ghazala F. Hashmi and Republican John Reid.
A recounting of several surveys conducted by Newsweek reveals that Democrat Spanberger leads among voters with 52.2 percent to 43.2 percent for Republican Earle-Sears.
