During his career, Cheney supported the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq and defended interrogation techniques that were later labeled torture.
City of Mexico, 4 de November (SinEmbargo).- Dick Cheney, former vice president of States Joined (EU) and central figure of the George W. Bush administration after the attacks of the September 11 (9/11) 2001, died at the age of 84. His family reported that he died Monday night, surrounded by his wife, Lynne Cheney, and his daughters, Liz and Mary, from complications of pneumonia and cardiovascular problems.
Cheney was considered one of the most influential vice presidents in recent US history. From his position, he supported the decisions of the then President after the attacks, including the invasion of Afghanistan in October of that year and the subsequent war in Iraq in 2003.
Before the Vice Presidency, Cheney was Secretary of Defense, also under Bush, leading the intervention in the Persian Gulf, as well as a congressman from Wyoming and White House chief of staff during the Gerald Ford administration.
His family remembered his role as a family man and mentor: “Dick Cheney was a great man who instilled in his children and grandchildren a love for our country and a life of courage, honor, love, kindness and, above all, fly fishing,” they indicated in the statement. They added that they felt “deeply grateful for everything Dick Cheney did for our country. And we feel immensely fortunate to have loved and been loved by this noble and imposing man.”

During her time in government, Cheney was also a controversial figure: she supported the use of “enhanced” interrogation techniques against terrorism suspects, later described as torture by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and by the United Nations Organization (UN).
In his later years, he distanced himself from the Republican Party due to his criticism of President Donald Trump, whom he called a “coward” and “the greatest threat the country has ever faced.” He even supported Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 elections.
Born in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1941, Cheney lived for many years with cardiovascular problems and underwent a heart transplant in 2012, which he described as “the gift of life itself.” He spent his last years retired, dedicated to his family and fly fishing.
Vice President Cheney was a man of unparalleled patriotism and remarkable courage. He never paled before tough decisions, never flinched from responsibility, and always took the necessary action to keep our country safe.
