The public controversy that arose around the murder of the Mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, is being used politically to criticize the Government and to reposition ultra-conservative right-wing sectors.
Mexico City, November 3 (However).- In the midst of the commotion over the murder of the Mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzoat the same time as the National Action Party (PAN), he Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) y Citizen Movement (MC) held responsible Government federal government due to violence, has begun to circulate in social networks the call for the call “Generation Z March”, and motion which is presented as citizenbut whose promotion in digital platforms and without a visible figure to summon it, it has raised doubts about its authenticity. While, since Government federal, la President Claudia Sheinbaum warned that behind both actions—the use of crime and youth mobilization—hides an attempt by right by reposition yourself politically.
In recent days it began to circulate in social networks the call for a movement identified as the Generation Z Marchdirected to young people born between 1997 and 2010who are calling to demonstrate next November 15 of the Angel of Independence al capital zocalo. According to the call, the protest seeks to express fatigue with the corruptionthe political class and the governments of Morena. However, until now there is no clarity about who is organizing or financing the mobilization, which is spread mainly on social networks.

The mobilization is spread mainly through TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). In Mexico, the account @generacionz_mx has taken on the promotion of the march, ensuring that it is a non-partisan movement inspired by global protests in the Philippines, Nepal and France, as well as the anime One Piecewhich they consider a symbol of resistance and freedom against authoritarianism.
In its manifesto, this group states that its objective is to “firmly expose corruption, mobilize intelligently at strategic points and create tactical alliances that transform social fatigue into collective action,” ensuring that they do not seek power, but rather “open the way for truly prepared, ethical people without partisan ties to reach it through transparent processes and clean elections.”
The movement is presented as a supposed response to the disenchantment of a part of the youth with political institutions. But now after the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, members of this group took up the case to present it as a symbol of the crisis of violence and corruption facing the country. In the accounts related to the movement, images of a protest were shared in front of the Government Palace of Michoacán, where clashes and acts of violence occurred, with messages saying “this is just beginning.”

Although the call insists that it has no relationship with any party or economic group, the lack of a visible group or faces that officially promote this movement has generated suspicions about who is behind them and whether they have the support of businessmen or right-wing groups. Among the young people who have promoted the mobilization, Miguel Samaniego, son of the former presidential candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, stands out.
The opposition capitalizes on crime
The opposition reacted harshly, and immediately. The PAN, the PRI and MC accused the federal government of having left Manzo alone, despite his repeated complaints about the presence of organized crime in Michoacán.
The PAN stated on its social networks that “the fear that Mexican families live with cannot continue.” “The Government must assume its responsibility and guarantee the safety of all,” he added. “From the National Executive Committee of the PAN we demand justice, and that peace and tranquility be returned to Michoacán and all of Mexico,” reads its position.
The PRI pointed out that “murdering an elected authority is a direct attack on the Mexican State and another example of the violence that continues to hit our country.”
“We demand justice. That this crime does not go unpunished, and that the authorities act firmly and without delay to capture and punish those responsible,” he added.
Con #CarlosManzo There have been 7 mayors murdered in Michoacán since 2022 with the arrival of @ARBedolla

Even on social networks, international right-wing figures such as Spanish Representative Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo linked the murder to institutional deterioration and the lack of guarantees for those who face crime.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Kenia López Rabadán, condemned the murder and asked that the crime be thoroughly clarified. He said that no phrase will calm the pain, but death crossed a line that should mark a before and after in the fight against crime.
For his part, PAN deputy, Federico Döring, said that what happened is a tragedy. He stated that the Mayor of Uruapán not only had his life taken by organized crime, but also by the “indifference of the Security Cabinet” and the “negligence” of a Government that never looked back at him. He announced that they will ask for the resignation of Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla. He said that the responsibility for the murder lies with President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum questions the legitimacy of the march
The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, questioned this Monday the authenticity of the mobilization called under the name of the “March of Generation Z”, but in addition, she also took the opportunity to warn that there is a “political use” of the murder of the Mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo.
I call for unity and responsibility of all authorities.
The death of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, crossed a line that should mark a before and after in terms of combating crime.

And today, in the morning conference, they asked him about this march that, according to its organizers, is non-partisan. Furthermore, the protest includes among its causes the murder of the Michoacan Mayor. In this regard, Sheinbaum indicated that the accounts they called would be investigated, but he did highlight that the opposition is taking advantage of the Mayor’s crime to promote a narrative against his government.
“If you want, at another time we will talk this week about this demonstration that is supposedly being called by young people of a generation and we will see what the accounts are that propose it, which has nothing to do with a legitimate demonstration.” […] It is not something legitimate that has arisen from some young people, but they are the same: Mexicans due to corruption, now linked to a business group and others who have not found a way out, because they no longer have much social recognition and who are linked through this scheme,” he expressed.
He added that he requested a review of the accounts that spread the call and that a report will be presented in the coming days, as he assured that there is “a lot of money involved” in the digital promotion of that march.
On the other hand, Sheinbaum pointed out that on social networks there are sectors of “the right” and the “most excessive conservatism”, including those of the PRI and the PAN, promoting their agendas.
I condemn with absolute firmness the vile murder of the municipal president of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo. I express my most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as to the people of Uruapan in the face of this irreparable loss.

“The other thing is the political use that some want to give to this regrettable and condemnable situation. That political use, that in reality there is not even empathy with what happened, due to the way this barrage is coming, but on the contrary, is the use of this moment for ‘narco-government’, all that that did not work for them at the time, the very obvious political use of this situation to launch against the Government,” he said.
The President insisted that, although her Government deeply regrets the murder of the Mayor of Uruapan, the incident will not be allowed to be used politically.
“They are two different things, because in one you have to have sensitivity, empathy and pay attention. […] And then the other thing, those from the right and those who were not from the right, but now they are linked to the most excessive conservatism, the PRIAN and others, because there are also other parties. But above all, these people who do not like the movement that we represent are bothered by the fact that people support us and so they are looking through social networks for a scheme to position themselves,” he added.
Regarding the versions that circulated on social networks that the murdered Mayor had not received support from the federal government, Sheinbaum denied it and assured that there was coordination with federal and military authorities.
“The National Guard was there, even the commander of the 21st Military Zone met recently with the mayor; that is, there was support. And of course these circumstances make us reinforce the strategy and strengthen it,” he stated.
“We demand justice. That this crime does not go unpunished, and that the authorities act firmly and without delay to capture and punish those responsible,” he added.
