They investigate real estate negligence
Experts, who are collecting samples of scaffolding material that covered the façade, suggest that one of the causes could be due to the use of bamboo. This material, together with the polystyrene panels, would have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Yesterday, the Hong Kong Police announced the arrest of two directors and an engineering consultant of a construction company suspected of using substandard fireproof materials during renovation of Wang Fuk Court, the affected residential complex.
“The police investigation has found indications of gross negligence on the part of the construction company, as the materials—such as protective nets, sheets, tarpaulins, etc. used on the exterior wall of the residential buildings involved—have been found to be deficient in Fire Safety standards. The lower ability of these materials to resist or slow down combustion is believed to have exacerbated the spread of the fire and resulted in the numerous victims,” the Hong Kong Police explained on its X account.

Around 800 firefighters and 140 trucks were sent to the scene, where drones were also used to put out the flames and try to identify the number of people trapped.
Likewise, the Hong Kong authorities have announced that flags will fly at half-mast in official buildings, as well as the cancellation of all official celebration events in memory of the victims of the huge fire, according to the ‘South China Morning Post’ newspaper.
The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, John Lee, has ordered the start of inspections in all public buildings undergoing renovation work as a result of the event, after investigations suggested that a highly flammable rigid polystyrene foam in the windows of the flats caused the rapid spread of the flames.
