According to what was reported by the authorities, the explosion occurred inside the prison’s recycling workshop, a place where the inmates worked the night shift separating plastics. After the explosion, a fire was generated that soon spread to other areas of the prison and to a carpentry workshop.
“The recycling workshop is one of the areas where people deprived of liberty carry out work activities in various shifts; the area is used to separate plastics,” said an official report.

At the time of the explosion, personnel from the penitentiary institution activated the protocols so that the internal Civil Protection brigade could attend to the mishap and begin containing the flames.
Civil protection personnel from Puerto Vallarta also went to the scene and found the two inmates dead, while two others were slightly injured, according to the agency.
For their part, the prison’s security elements evacuated the inmates who were working in the affected area to transfer two other injured people to the medical care area in the same prison complex, where it was determined that they did not warrant hospitalization.
The prison authorities indicated that they also have institutional support from the Ministry of Defense (Defense), the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) and the National Guard (GN) to maintain surveillance in accordance with the emergency response protocol.
