The initiative seeks for the citizens of the capital to transform old habits when disposing of “garbage” into a new common sense in the management of waste in Mexico City.
Mexico City, November 30 (However).- Do you live in the Mexico City (CdMx) and you usually mix the organic waste with the inorganic? Get ready to transform those habits and contribute to a better separation of these starting in January 2026, the date from which it will be mandatory in the capital.
The Head of Government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada Molinapresented this Sunday the campaign “Transform your City, every waste in its place” in order to have a better use of the “waste” and an optimal residual classification that allows adequate separation of the “garbage“.
Here we share the details of this initiative of the capital’s Government that contemplates the following guidelines.
👏 Throughout the month of December we will spread the campaign #TransformaTuCiudadCadaResiduoEnSuLugar to promote waste separation and recycling. ♻️📈

What does the initiative consist of?
According to the authorities, citizens must redefine our understanding of what “garbage” means. The Head of Government explained that garbage is waste that can no longer be used; and what it is about is getting used to naming what can no longer be used as “waste”, which refers to something reusable, since the objective is to transform it and for the waste to have a value for recycling and reuse.
Therefore, it is important:
- Do not mix waste with garbage.
- Separate organic waste from inorganic waste.
- Separate inorganic waste depending on its material: plastics, aluminum, cardboard, etc.
- Dispose of garbage in separate containers: waste from the bathroom and other materials that can no longer be reused.

When will the waste be collected?
The authorities detailed that the trucks designated for waste collection will pass on specific days of the week according to their type:
- On Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, recyclable waste will be collected, such as bottles, cardboard and aluminum, as well as non-recyclable waste, including waste from the bathroom and others.
- On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the collection of organic waste, such as food scraps, will take place.
Likewise, it was reported that:
- 56 percent of waste is organic.
- 22 percent inorganic that are recycled.
- The remaining 22 percent belongs to non-recyclable inorganics.
Infrastructure expansion
During 2005, more than 150 million pesos were allocated to purchase the necessary infrastructure to convert waste into compost, through a large plant in Bordo Poniente, which is estimated to be operational by next January.
The head of the local Executive added that the purchase of two more plants is planned for 2026 for the south-eastern area of Mexico City, and, in 2027, another two more, which will give a total of five plants, thus avoiding the expenditure of resources in the transportation of waste.
