Last night, municipal president Cecilia Patrón Laviada illuminated the traditional Montejo Remate Tree, a symbol that marks the beginning of the Christmas celebrations in the Yucatecan capital, a bulletin reports.
“Like every year we start with the Remate tree, but today Mérida shines brighter than ever because we bring this joy to many more spaces in our city, filling it with family unity and coexistence, because that means Christmas, peace and love in every home,” he expressed.
During the event, the mayor highlighted that this 2025, for the first time, the City Council will light eight Christmas trees distributed in various parts of the city, allowing thousands of families to enjoy the magic of Christmas close to their homes.
“We are all a big family, and Christmas invites us to meet again and value those we love, the city we have and the future that we can continue to build with solidarity and community unity,” he indicated.
The celebration included the special presentation of the show by Morita and “Karlita and her friends”, who entertained children in a festive atmosphere. Families enjoyed music, games and a colorful show prior to the long-awaited lighting.
The emblematic tree measures 20 meters high and has more than 7 thousand LED lights.
At the Auction, a curtain of flashing lights was also placed at the entrance, 17 luminous banners on poles, 17 canes, two reindeer, a tunnel, Santa’s sleigh, large spheres, a Christmas parade, spheres and lights on 20 trees, fences decorated with pine trees, a polar bear, gift boxes, the three wise men, the star of Belem and a figure of Santa Claus. The Paseo de Montejo is decorated from 47th Street to the monument to the Homeland with 41 luminous decorations on posts in the central median and cold and warm lights on 290 trees on the side walkways of the Avenue.
60th Street between 53rd Street and 47th Street and 47th Street between Paseo de Montejo and 50th Street were decorated with illuminated parades with Christmas motifs.

The “Mérida Brilla” Christmas Festival will take place on January 7, 2026, with an extensive program that is totally free for the people of Merida to enjoy.
Among the most anticipated activities of this edition, the “Magia sobre Hielo” Ice Rink stands out, on Paseo de Montejo along Avenida Colón, available Monday to Friday from 4 to 9 pm, and on weekends from 11 am to 3 pm and from 4 to 9 pm.
On December 24 and 31 it will operate from 9 am to 12 pm, providing a unique experience for children and adults.
Another of the great attractions will be the immersive show “Paths of Magic and Light”, which will illuminate the Poniente Ecological Park, where families will be able to walk between tunnels and illuminated figures that transform the landscape into an enchanted world,
Likewise, the “video mapping” in the Peace Park every night will project Christmas stories and motifs that will surprise local visitors and tourists.
The traditional Christmas Caravans also return. This year they will travel five routes in the south, north, east and west directions, bringing music, Christmas characters and mobile shows directly to the neighborhoods and police stations.
For the young and sporty public, the program includes the Christmas Night Bike Route and the Christmas in Action activity in the Extreme Sports Park, where thematic lighting will be combined with sports demonstrations.
The entrepreneurial spirit will have its space in the Bazaritas “Allies to undertake”, a meeting point for artisans, creators and micro-entrepreneurs who will offer local products ideal for Christmas shopping.
“We invite you to enjoy this Mérida that we have decorated with great love, parks, roundabouts and avenues reflect the joy that unites us on these dates,” he concluded.
The mayor was accompanied by federal deputies Abril Ferreyro Rosado and Isabel Rodríguez Heredia, local deputies María Teresa Boehm Calero, Sayda Rodríguez Gómez and Marco Pasos Tec, councilor Karla Boehm Calero, and the general coordinator of Social Justice and Human Development, Flora Zapata Mendiola.
