Al-Ahly and Zamalek qualified for the final of the Egyptian Super Cup football competition held in the Emirates, after the former achieved victory over Ceramica Cleopatra 2-1 at Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, while the latter defeated Pyramids 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in regular time at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi in the two semi-final matches on Thursday.
The final match will be held next Sunday at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi, where Al-Ahly hopes to strengthen its record and win the title for the 16th time in its history, while Zamalek seeks to win the title for the fifth and first time since 2020.
It is preceded by a match between Pyramids and Ceramica Cleopatra for third place at Al Nahyan Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
Al-Ahly holds the title it won in the last four editions, and in last year’s final it defeated Zamalek on penalties after a goalless draw in regular and extra time.
The competition brings together the Al-Ahly League champion, the cup champion, Zamalek, and the Professional Club League Cup champion, Ceramica Cleopatra, in addition to the league runner-up, Pyramids.
Al-Ahly’s victory over Ceramica Cleopatra 2-1 came after a strong match, as it hopes to win the first crown for its new Danish coach, Yes Thorup, while Ceramica Cleopatra’s hopes of winning the Egyptian Super Cup title for the first time in its history have ended.
Al-Ahly took the lead through Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet (19) with a perfect header from inside the penalty area after receiving Ahmed Sayed “Zizou”’s cross to score from close range past Mohamed Bassam.
Al-Ahly’s lead continued until the 41st minute, when Marawan Othman was able to equalize after receiving a through pass from Moroccan Ahmed Belhaj, so he went one-on-one with Mohamed El-Shenawy’s goal and put the ball into his net, and the first half ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the second half, Al-Ahly regained the lead in the 52nd minute through Slovenian Nets Gradishar, after Zizou sent a cross to Moroccan Achraf Ben Sharqi, who returned it to Gradishar, close to the goal line, to put the ball into the net and give Al-Ahly the lead again.
Penalty kicks smile for Zamalek
In Abu Dhabi, Zamalek defeated Pyramids on penalties after a scoreless draw in regular time.
Mostafa Abdel Raouf “Zico” missed Pyramids’ fifth penalty kick, while Zamalek scored all five of its kicks to continue its journey to the final match.
The result is a repeat of what happened in the Egypt Cup final, which ended in a draw with one goal for each team before Zamalek won on penalties, which is what also happened in the Egyptian Super Cup semi-final in its previous edition.
The first half did not witness many opportunities, and the most notable event was that Palestinian Zamalek striker Uday Al-Dabbagh was injured, leaving the field and Ahmed Sharif entering instead.
The matter was not much different in the second half, despite Pyramids’ relative control and their attempts to score in vain, so the match went to penalty kicks, which smiled at the white team, which hopes to win the title under the leadership of its temporary coach, Ahmed Abdel Raouf.
