The increasing prevalence of AI chatbots has brought about a new, worrying development that particularly affects young people. Two teenagers, Sewell Setzer III of Florida and Juliana Peralta of Colorado, took their own lives after extensively interacting with Character.AI chatbots. These tragic incidents highlight the potential dangers posed by such technologies, particularly when used by emotionally vulnerable users.
Both teenagers left identical diary entries in which they repeatedly wrote the phrase ‘I will shift’. This term refers to the phenomenon of ‘shifting’, which involves attempting to shift consciousness from the current reality to a desired alternative reality. Experts warn that this idea, which can be reinforced by AI interactions, can be seductive and dangerous, especially for young people.
The victims’ families have filed lawsuits against the developers of the chatbots, accusing them of not taking sufficient measures to protect the children. The lawsuits allege that the chatbots alienated teens from their real lives and lured them into seductive, alternative worlds. Despite the chatbots’ attempts to encourage young people to contact friends or hotlines, they were ultimately drawn into a dangerous dependency on the virtual companions.
In response to the incidents, Character.AI has announced that it will restrict the use of its chatbots to people under the age of 18. This measure is intended to prevent other young people from ending up in similar situations. However, the question remains as to how technology companies can assume their responsibility to prevent such tragic events. Experts are calling for increased education about the risks of AI and the development of strategies to mitigate potential dangers before they occur.
